Presently a Senior Lecturer in Music and Sound Technology at Leeds Beckett University, Leeds, UK. Previously (2011-2014) a lecturer in Sound for Film and Creative Media at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT), Dundalk, Ireland.
The following is a list of various workshops, tutorials and educational programmes that Matt has designed and delivered since 2006. Matt’s specialities include digital music production, sound editing, field recording, live sound/visual manipulation and interaction design through use of sensors or otherwise:
• Ormeau Baths Gallery, Belfast – Podcasting Tutorial (02/2011) and Musique concrète workshop (02/2008)
For the later workshop, a small group of participants were lead through a days training upon how to record in the field (through a sound walk within belfast) using a variety of microphone and hardware. In addition, back in the gallery, they were introduced to some basic editing techniques and with these skills created short musique concrète inspired sound compositions.
• ISIS Arts, Newcastle – New Media Tuition (01/2006 – Onwards, Last: 06/2009)
Delivery of tailored one-on-one tuition programmes to professional artists wishing to expand their knowledge of particular digital technologies and processes. To date, I have delivered sessions on the following subjects:
– Real-time manipulation of visuals via an audio signal
– Real-time manipulation of visuals through use of audio/midi controllers
– Recognition of videogame sounds as a means to drive new audiovisual actions
– Production of live audiovisual compositions through use of VJ software
– Tracking of movement/colour for use in dance performance
– Use of sensors (e.g. infra-red and light sensors) to control audio and visuals.
• Queen’s University, Belfast – Teaching Assistant (09/2007 – 03/2008)
Assisted lecturers in their delivery of the module ‘Computer Programming for Music’, which was delivered to second and third students studying for a Bachelors in Music Technology. These modules sought to provide students with a working knowledge of the software platform Processing (Java programming) and of PHP and Mysql databases (online activity).
• Digital Arts Studio (DAS), Belfast – Ableton Live Workshop (10/2007)
• BBC Blast, Glasgow – Audio assistant for Scrapyard Challenge (09/2007)
Scrapyard Challenge is a world-wide travelling workshop run by Jonah Brucker-Cohen and Katherine Moriwaki. For the Glasgow workshop, a group of young people were lead through a number of hardware hacking techniques and, in continuation, the creation of unique, personal, digital musical instruments from these components.
• City Halls, Glasgow – Music Technology Project Leader (03/2006 – 01/2007)
Working alongside Natalie Davidson and Pete Dowling and under the banner “Fusion Project”, flexible tri-weekly programmes of learning were delivered that allowed each participant to develop music production and performance skills through the musical styles they enjoy. Furthermore, the project looked to fostering new working relationships and friendships between all contributors through group activities, allowing a trading of skills and influence.
• Stills Gallery, Edinburgh – Hi-Hack Workshop (07/2006)
Demonstration of different hardware hacking techniques and how to interface circuit bent instruments. This musical workshop was created so as to involve individuals of all ages, from new computer uses to the more experienced performers.
